Listen to the news

Bank of Hawaii Corporation's (NYSE:BOH) investors are due to receive a payment of $0.70 per share on 13th of June. The dividend yield will be 4.2% based on this payment which is still above the industry average.

Bank of Hawaii's Payment Expected To Have Solid Earnings Coverage

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained.

Having distributed dividends for at least 10 years, Bank of Hawaii has a long history of paying out a part of its earnings to shareholders. Taking data from its last earnings report, calculating for the company's payout ratio shows 78%, which means that Bank of Hawaii would be able to pay its last dividend without pressure on the balance sheet.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 19.0% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along the course it has been charting recently, our estimates show the future payout ratio being 70% which brings it into quite a comfortable range.

Bank of Hawaii Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was $1.80, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $2.80. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.5% a year over that time. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.

Dividend Growth Is Doubtful

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, things aren't all that rosy. Over the past five years, it looks as though Bank of Hawaii's EPS has declined at around 6.7% a year. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.

Our Thoughts On Bank of Hawaii's Dividend

Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. Although they have been consistent in the past, we think the payments are a little high to be sustained. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Without at least some growth in earnings per share over time, the dividend will eventually come under pressure either from competition or inflation. Businesses can change though, and we think it would make sense to see what analysts are forecasting for the company. Is Bank of Hawaii not quite the opportunity you were looking for?
