The Kinsale Capital Group, Inc. (NYSE:KNSL) share price has had a bad week, falling 10%. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. It's fair to say most would be happy with 287% the gain in that time. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Kinsale Capital Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 43% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 31% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Kinsale Capital Group's TSR for the last 5 years was 290%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

While it's never nice to take a loss, Kinsale Capital Group shareholders can take comfort that , including dividends, their trailing twelve month loss of 2.7% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 4.5%. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 31%, each year, over five years. It could be that the business is just facing some short term problems, but shareholders should keep a close eye on the fundamentals. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Kinsale Capital Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Kinsale Capital Group , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
